Several groups and non-profit organizations have joined Frente Animal’s campaign to ask Pingo Doce to adopt more effective measures to reduce animal suffering in its chicken supply chain.
The alarming images released in the investigation that gave rise to the campaign prompted the creation of a joint letter signed by around 20 national and international animal rights organizations, with the aim of showing Pingo Doce their concern about the situations identified and calling for the implementation of significant improvement measures, with a view to safeguarding the interests of consumers, public health and animal welfare.
Among the NGOs and groups that have signed the petition are portuguese Animais de Rua, Liga Portuguesa Pelos Direitos dos Animais and PATAV, as well as other influential organizations such as France’s L214 and Germany’s Albert Schweitzer Foundation.
The organizations are calling on Pingo Doce to adopt the European Chicken Commitment – a set of measures founded on a solid scientific basis and widely supported by experts. This commitment is recognized as the most effective approach to minimizing the suffering of chickens in production and supply.
